Fresh off of an undefeated state championship run in 2024, Urbana’s Boys Lacrosse team was set for yet another deep playoff push in 2025. Going into the season, senior midfielder Will McLeod believed that the group “would be able to win another championship… the only thing that could stop us from doing so was ourselves,”. The Hawks’ season began as everyone expected, undefeated. In the team’s first five games, the offense averaged over seventeen goals per game, while the defense surrendered fewer than three. Very few teams throughout the state would be able to contest this level of dominance. Urbana’s head coach, Gavin Donahue, credited the early success to the defense. “I think that one of our strong points is definitely our defense. I don’t think we really had any hole from our mid to LMS to our close defenseman and our goalie,” he explained. Despite the strong start, Urbana’s team was dealt their first loss in over two years, coming at the hands of the Bullis School in a 16-7 blowout. Just a few days later, the Hawks lost to their first MPSSAA opponent, the Kent Island Buccaneers, 9-7. Following the second loss, the team’s captains, including senior midfielder Brandon Sybrant, called a players-only meeting. In this meeting, Sybrant explained that “there was definitely a lot of frustration within the team. As a team, [they] couldn’t pull together a good practice that week and [they] had to end a practice early… the meeting opened everyone’s eyes on how we aren’t untouchable,”. This meeting had an immediate impact on the team’s success. Following the loss to Kent Island, Urbana, now with an unexpected 5-2 record, quickly turned their season back to how they planned. In their next game, the Hawks defeated the Sherwood Warriors by a 16-run margin. After that, the team proceeded to win every game throughout the remainder of the regular season, concluding with a pair of shutouts against 2A state quarterfinalist Hereford and 3A state runner-up Towson. In the team’s first three playoff games, the Hawks managed to outscore their opponents 64-7. Through the eyes of Coach Donahue, the state semi-final game against the second-seeded Walt Whitman Vikings was going to be “a higher level team than what we saw in the first three rounds of the playoffs,”. The match proved to be their closest since the 9-3 victory against Catonsville, but the Hawks did secure the victory, defeating Whitman 12-7. Despite the victory and the championship game birth, Brandon Sybrant was feeling uneasy after the game, explaining that “we had so many opportunities to score and we just couldn’t,”. Before the final game, Urbana’s preparation schedule consisted of several days solely dedicated to watching film. “We broke down our Whitman film… we watched just a game of Broadneck… then the last day we filmed our practice and broke that down,” described Coach Donahue. With this schedule, he and his team felt immensely prepared going into the final game. The entire game proceeded to be a defensive showdown. At halftime, Urbana led by just one. With the narrow lead, Coach Donahue’s message to the team was simple – “Trust the process and keep grinding.”. Despite the game being a stark contrast to how well the offense typically performed, the Hawks’ five goals wound up being enough. With a final score of 5-2, for the second consecutive season, the Urbana Hawks were crowned 4A boys lacrosse champions. With eleven seniors departing the team, Coach Donahue will be counting on his current junior class, consisting of sixteen athletes, as well as the rest of the 70% of this year’s team that will be back in 2026.
🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH 2025 BOYS Urbana vs Broadneck Another great rematch game at MPSSAA BOYS LAX States between two teams I love, the Urbana Hawks and the Broadneck Bruins. If you were expecting a high pound-for-poind scoring match, this was not the game.. It must be noted these were two top defensive teams in the state. They both specialized in keeping teams from scoring and their goal save rate was exception. I believe both have goals allowed around 3.0. So the anticipation for MFV was which team would be bullied into giving up points the . I expected a low score matchup. And it was, although the Hawks did have a good lead before the Bruins scored their fist points. And although Broadneck held the Hawks from having a sizable spread, the Hawks still sealed the deal and won back-to-back state titles BIG LOVE to BROADNECK, as we are proud of you!!!n. You represented AA County well, and wish you much more success in the future. BIG CONGRATS to URBANA, proud you guys were able to have back-to-back championships. 🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH 2025 Urbana vs Broadneck Two great girls lacrosse teams faced off in the 4A Girls LAX Championship; The Urbana Hawks vs the Broadneck Bruins. Urbana looking to even the score from last year, while Broadneck sought a back-to-back victory. This had the makings of a beautiful finals rematch. Glad to the weather turned out to be great. Starting off, Urbana took a 4pt lead, and that left the Bruins fighting through the half until they were able to tie things up heading into the half. 2nd half, the Hawks led by a point, however this time Broadneck came back and obtained the lead, ultimately capturing a back-to-back state victory!!! BIG SHOUTS to the Urbana HAWKS, you guys played with passion and fire. I know the results are not what you’d prefer, proud of you ladies. You had a successful season. CONGRATULATIONS to the BRUINS for another state championship victory. Your hard work and dedication paid off!! So proud of you. Urbana beats Broadneck 5-2 for their 2nd straight 4A title — 3rd in 5 years! 🦅 Defense wins it again!
On May 22, Broadneck dominate the CLASS 4A championship for a 5th time in a row, winning 8-6 over Urbana. The first quarter of the CLASS 4A championship kicked off with #18 Colby Johnson from Urbana started the game with an opening goal. Johnson later added goal 2 to the game and brought the lead up to Urbana. #11 Corra Betten continued the Urbana strong start, receiving a key pass from a penalty and allowing the nice shot to become a goal. Urbana’s speed was too much for Broadneck, allowing a 2nd goal for Beten, using her swiftness to allow a shooting lane. Broadneck finally got into the board, scoring from the penalty spot by #9 Ceci Facciponti. The first quarter ended 4-1, with Urbana defense keeping hold and carrying the lead. Broadneck shortened the Urbana lead into half minutes into the 2nd quarter, with Salisbury commit #21 Savannah Libby benefiting from key passes. Momentum was starting to turn, with Facciponti shooting a low shot from a penalty, bringing the score to 3-4. Possession was booming for Broadneck, slowly cutting down the lead and starting to strengthen their defense. In a matter of minutes, the game was tied up from an open lane shot scored by #17 Nora Lopes, who is also committed to Louisville, and tying the game to 4-4. Urbana quickly came back on top, going back up by 1 goal and securing the hat-trick for #18 Johnson. The 1st half ended with a 5-4 tight Urbana lead. The halftime break ended and the game entered the 3rd quarter, with both teams playing neck and neck. It was a goalie save frenzy for both teams, with both goalies recording 2 saves. A goal was scored for Broadneck, hoping to score the equalizer but was waived off from another overlapping penalty, keeping the score 5-4. 2nd times the charm for Broadneck, with Libby going to the penalty shot again and catching the goalie off guard, tying the game at 5-5. A crucial save came from Broad Necks' goalie Molly Robison, recording her 3 saves of the quarter. Lopes does it again, giving Broadneck their first lead of the game. The quarter ended 6-5, with Broadneck switching the lead seat. 4th quarter tensions started to kick in for both teams as soon as it began. Broadneck now started to control possession, scoring a goal from #3 Sienna Miller, bringing the lead to 7-5. Urbana was leading the game 4-0 in the 1st quarter, questioning how it all collapsed. Shooting lanes were not available for Urbana, with Broadneck strengthening up and scoring from a counter attack. Facciponti completed the transition goal, recording the hat-trick and bringing the score up to 8-5. Betten shortened the lead to 2, getting open for Urbana and having the lead be slightly smaller. Time expired as Broadneck celebrated on the field, winning their 5th straight championship title, as Broadneck completed the early comeback and won the 4A state Champions 8-6 over Urbana.

Both teams came out firing, however in the end the Cavaliers maintaiined a good lead that gave them the title of the 2025 MPSSAA 1A Girls Champions. 🥍 🥍 ROAD TO STEVENSON MPSSAA 1A BOYS LAX CHAMPIONSHIP | (2) Fallston Cougars vs (4) Middletown Knights This might be one of the best comeback games to ever hit the states LAX fields at Stevenson. Fallston took a dominant lead in the first half scoring 7 goals. Then, the Middletown Knights scored 9 points in the second half holding the Cougars to just one goal in the second half. It was amazing to see that type of comeback, most of which was in the fourth quarter. BIG SHOUTS to the COUGARS, as you played excellent, we are proud of you guys. Your 1A Girls Lacrosse CHAMPS — South Carroll! 🏆🥍 Big win over Middletown, 13-5! Congrats ladies 🎉
On May 20, the No.1 South Carroll lifted the Class 1A MPSSAA girls lacrosse trophy in a 13-5 victory against No.3 Middletown The Class 1A girls lacrosse state championship kicked off between Middletown and South Carrroll with a slightly slow start. Both Teams played with strong offensive aggression but couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net. South Carroll would keep the upper hand over Middletown, scoring the first goal of the game. The quarter ended 1-0 with a South Carroll lead. Going into the 2nd quarter, MiddleTown would have a strong offensive surge in wanting to gather the lead. With the helps of #13 Kacie Phillips and #4 Kam Apple, their use of offensive rushing and team chemistry brought the score up to 2-1. South Carroll tied the game at 2-2 with the use of #18 Leah Miller. Her name would soon come up in fright as time progressed. Middletown would gather the lead once again near the 6 minute mark, bringing the score to #15 Lillie Brown from an open shooting lane. Only 1 failed ground ball from Middletown would crucially impact their momentum, heavily shifting towards South Carroll. #6 Campbell Black started the boost for South Carroll, tying the game in a minute. The Name of Miller rose once again, giving the Cavaliers the lead from the help of a penalty shot. She would be accompanied by #19 Charlotte Harington, scoring an impressive side shot goal. Defense continued to die down for MiddleTown, letting Miller secure her hat trick with 1:03 remaining in the half. The 1st half ended 6-3, with South Carroll quickly changing the tone of the game. Although the deficit was growing, high morale was demonstrated from Middletown, creating a dance circle at the bench as the 2nd half was about to Begin. Miller wanted to continue adding goals into her state championship records, scoring a over-the-head goal into the left side of the net. #6 Black resurged again in the 3rd, getting a goal in from the helps of crucial passes, leaving shooting lanes wide open. Little signs of improvement started to show for Middletown, with Philips getting the foul called and scoring off a penalty shot, keeping the score 8-4 at 6:45. Middletown kept the game in South Carroll Territory, but couldn’t barge through from South Carroll's dominant defensive schemes. Campbell would become the 2nd player with a hat trick for South Carroll, shooting a strong goal over the goalies head to bring the deficit up to 5. The 3rd quarter ended with a 9-4 lead, with the trophy leaning towards South Carroll. 4th quarter play was different for both teams, with the Cavaliers playing with full force and Middletown wanting to finish strong, despite the score. #14 Catherine Yankle added more fuel to the fire, adding an additional goal to the Cavaliers lead. South Carroll wanted to waste as much time after winning the ground ball. Multiple Minutes drained with South Carroll attempting shots in MiddleTown. Miller and Black continued to play their aggressiveness, leading to 2 goals for South Caroll, bringing the score to 11-4 at 5:30. Possession wasn’t in favor of Middletown, leading to another Miller goal, recording 6 goals in the Chip. Time Expired as South Carroll wins the Class 1A state Championship 13-5 against Middletown, lifting the trophy.
